In the original 1979 film Alien, director Ridley Scott wanted the commercial towing spaceship, the Nostromo, to feel like a gritty, hazardous, industrial work environment rather than a shiny utopian vessel. To achieve this, designer Ron Cobb created a fully realized visual language known as the Semiotic Standard.
The Design Concept: Cobb drafted a collection of more than 30 geometric pictograms and abstract logos. They were meant to look like off-the-shelf, standardized industrial decals purchased from a futuristic manufacturing catalog.
Functionality Over Fashion: The icons communicated specific ship functions and safety warnings, such as “Pressurized Area,” “Radiation Hazard,” and “Artificial Gravity”.
